Sigma Delta Chi Awards

The Sigma Delta Chi Awards date back to 1932, when the Society first honored six individuals for contributions to journalism. The current program began in 1939, when the organization awarded the first Distinguished Service Awards. These awards later became the Sigma Delta Chi Awards.

The awards recognize the best in professional journalism in categories covering print, radio, television, newsletters, art/graphics, online and research. The contest is open to any U.S. media outlet and international SPJ members. Entries must have been published or broadcast during the 2024 calendar year. Winners will be announced in Q2 of 2025.

Mark of Excellence Awards

Annually, the Society of Professional Journalists presents the Mark of Excellence Awards honoring the best in student journalism. The awards offer categories for print, radio, television and online collegiate journalism. Entries are first judged on the regional level. First place regional winners advance to the national competition. National winners will be showcased on spj.org.

The contest is open to anyone enrolled in a college or university in the U.S. studying for an academic degree in 2024. International SPJ student members may also enter. Students who have had full-time, professional journalism experience, outside of internships, are not eligible. Entries must have been published or broadcast during the 2024 calendar year. Regional winners are scheduled to be announced in Q2 of 2025 and national winners will be announced later in 2025.
